Public service patrol boats (PSP) play a crucial role in the State's action at sea in metropolitan France, in collaboration with other administrations such as maritime affairs and customs.
Their missions include maritime defense of the territory, monitoring fishing and navigation regulations, combating illicit trafficking, and preventing maritime pollution. They also monitor maritime traffic to avoid accidents, particularly in busy areas such as the English Channel.
The PSPs are equipped with four diesel engines, two machine guns, a water cannon, two navigation radars, and a raft for a fast boat. Their characteristics include a length of 54 meters, a width of 10 meters, a displacement of 406 tons, a speed of 19 knots, and a crew of 21 sailors. The vessels are identifiable by tricolor bands on the hull.
