The main mission of the Horizon frigates is to participate in the anti-aircraft defense of a carrier battle group, or to protect an area or a convoy against air or missile attacks.

Using Aster 30 missiles, they are the second protective bulwark of a carrier strike group, after the fighters, and provide 360 ​​° protection at a distance of 100 kilometers against planes and 30 kilometers against supersonic anti-ship missiles. grazing and maneuvering in service or in development.

They also implement anti-ship capabilities and anti-submarine self-defense assets.

Built in collaboration with Italy, 4 units are launched, including two for France:

The "Forbin" commissioned in 2010, and the "Chevalier Paul", in 2011. They replace the frigates Suffren and Duquesne.

With a length of 153 meters for more than 7,050 tons fully loaded, they are the largest frigates of the French Navy.
