A poster representing the different stages of deconstruction of the SSBN M4 in Cherbourg
After nearly a quarter of a century in the service of the French Navy, the first generation SSBNs, decommissioned between 1996 and 2008, are gradually being dismantled.
This extremely complex project is being carried out in Cherbourg by Naval Group, NEOM and Véolia. It is to be spread over 9 years, between 2018 and 2027, and concerns 5 ships: Le Terrible, Le Foudroyant, l'Indomptable, Le Tonnant and l'Inflexible.
The stakes are high: recycle as many materials as possible, while limiting the dangers and releases of toxic materials, such as asbestos or lead.
This poster summarizes the different stages in the life of the ship since its decommissioning: the cutting of its reactor section, the wait in the basin before deconstruction, then the cutting of the hull, carried out horizontally.
