The Type VII U-Boat was the Kriegsmarine's flagship submarine during World War II, with over 700 built, setting a serial production record.

This type, designed for the North Atlantic, fell between coastal and long-range submarines.

Replacing the Types III and IV, the Type VII-C, with 654 examples built between 1940 and 1945, was the most widespread.

Although effective, its range was less than that of Type IX. It operated throughout the war, playing a major role in the Allied anti-submarine campaign in 1943 and 1944. The Type VII-C was a slightly modified version of the VII-B, sharing the same engine and armament.

Some examples were equipped with a snorkel between 1944 and 1945. The U-96, a Type VII-C U-Boot, gained fame thanks to the novel "Das Boot" by Lothar-Günther Buchheim and the film of the same name directed by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981.
