Poster submarine u.s.s. albacore
A digital drawing of the US submarine Albacore
The Albacore is an experimental diesel / electric powered submarine of the United States Navy
It was used between 1953 and 1972 to test new hull configurations optimized for diving navigation.
The main objective was to define the configuration of future nuclear-powered submarines, which unlike their predecessors practically no longer navigate on the surface but spend their time diving.
Launched in 1953, the submarine validated the teardrop hull shape (which was retained by all other navies thereafter).
He therefore knows several configurations. Among the various tests, we note the test of cross bars, a simplified cockpit, the removal of the front dive bars. The US Navy will even test a polymer injection system along the hull to improve diving speed.
The Albacore became a museum ship in 1986: it is exhibited in Portsmouth in the state of New Hampshire.
