Ohio submarines are an American class of nuclear missile submarines used by the US Navy.

Since the fall of 1981 and the commissioning of the first Ohio, 18 buildings have been built, 14 of which are in service in 2021 in their original mission.

These boats are currently the second largest class of submarine in the world after the Russian "Typhoon".

This class can carry up to 24 ballistic missiles. On its own, an Ohio-class submarine is capable of wiping out all the major cities on a continent.

They carry Trident II missiles with a range of 11,000 km. Each missile, with a payload of 2,800 kg, carrying a maximum of 12 W76 warheads with an explosive power of 100 kilotons. This gives each submarine 28.8 megatons of firepower!

Following the SART II treaty aimed at reducing the number of nuclear weapons, the first 4 Ohio-class SSBNs were transformed into cruise missile submarines (154 Tomahawk).

Their replacement is expected at the beginning of the decade 2030
