USS Grayback, first ship of its class, is a submarine of the United States Navy.
It is the second ship to bear the Grayback name.
Her keel was laid on July 1, 1954 by the Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo, California.
Launched on July 2, 1957, it entered service in March 58.
The Grayback was originally designed as an attack submarine, but was converted into a Regulus cruise missile submarine in 1958. As nuclear missile submarines were being designed, these submarines were under development. sailors must surface to fire their missile.
