Poster submarine trafalgar class royal navy
A poster of the Royal Navy's Trafalgar class submarine
The nuclear attack submarines of the Trafalgar class were put into service by the Royal Navy from 1981. Major evolution of the Swiftsure, they are slightly longer and massive, but take the general design of their counterparts.
These submarines, modern and silent, see their 7 units evolve in view of the many modifications made to the electronics and weaponry, over the various overhauls.
They are armed with 5 torpedo tubes, able in particular to launch Tomahawk or Spearfish missiles.
While three submarines are still in service in 2020, the entire Trafalgar is expected to be decommissioned by 2022 and replaced with Astute-class submarines. Three submarines are still in service in 2020.
