Poster submarine porpoise class royal navy
A poster of the Royal Navy's Porpoise submarine
The design of the Porpoise class submarines was influenced by the German type XXI U-Boats (such as the Narval class submarines in France)
Larger than those of Class T, they benefited from new construction techniques.
54 meters long for a tonnage of 2450 tons, they had 8 torpedo tubes of 533 mm (6 at the front and 2 at the rear) using Mark 8 or Mark 23 torpedoes, then Mark 24 Tigerfish torpedoes.
They were also the first submarines to no longer be equipped with deck guns.
They were quieter than their NATO and Soviet Whiskey Class counterparts.
The eight Porpoise-class submarines built for the Royal Navy were the first patrol and attack submarines produced after World War II.
