A poster of the Royal Navy's Churchill class submarine
The Churchill class is the second class of the Royal Navy's nuclear submarines powered by a British nuclear reactor. The three units of this class, built at Barrow-in-Furness by the Vickers Shipyard, served from 1970 until 1990.
The leader-ship of this class is named after one of the Lords of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill.
Resulting from the improvement of the Valiant class, the British submarines were equivalent to the American Sturgeon class.
They were equipped with three types of weaponry: conventional Mark 48 torpedo, Tigerfish torpedo, AGM-84 Harpoon (anti-ship missile)
Note that the HMS Conqueror distinguished itself during the Falklands War by sinking, on May 2, 1982, the Argentine navy cruiser ARA General Belgrano. It is officially the only nuclear submarine to have been engaged in combat against an enemy ship.
