Poster tampion frigate Jean de Vienne

The Jean de Vienne was a Georges Leygues-class anti-submarine frigate in service with the French Navy. Bearing the designation D643, she was sponsored by Besançon.

She participated in Operation Artimon during the Gulf War, where 26 out of 52 conscripts volunteered. Her pennant, decorated with the Cross of Military Valor, was awarded in 2019.

Other ships have borne the name Jean de Vienne, including a La Galissonnière-class cruiser, scuttled in 1942.

Initially scheduled for decommissioning in 2015, the frigate remained in service until June 2018 following the sale of the FREMM Normandie to Egypt. Since 2019, it has been awaiting dismantling in Toulon, which will begin in Gironde in 2024.

Equipped with SIGMA 40 navigation systems, the frigate was armed with Exocet missiles, a Crotale system, a 100mm cannon, anti-aircraft guns, machine guns, and torpedo catapults. It could carry two Westland Lynx helicopters.

The Jean de Vienne participated in naval exercises, such as VARUNA-15, and played a crucial role in various French Navy missions.
