The Montcalm is a Georges Leygues-class anti-submarine frigate, in service with the French Navy from 1982 to 2017. Bearing the hull number D642, it honors Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and is sponsored by Nîmes.
Built by DCN Brest, it was launched in 1980 and commissioned in 1982. In 1999-2000, it underwent upgrades, including the addition of missile defense systems and new equipment. In 2002-2003, its hull was reinforced, increasing its displacement but reducing its range.
In 2008, the Montcalm performed the first automatic landings of a drone on a low-tonnage vessel. Initially scheduled for decommissioning in 2015, she remained in service until 2017. Since 2018, she has been awaiting dismantling in Toulon, which will begin in Gironde in 2024.
The frigate shares the traditions of the cruiser Montcalm, which received commendations and the Croix de Guerre in the years 39-45. She received an additional commendation during Operation Harmattan. Her muzzle flash depicts a naval anchor and a dragon, a reference to Dieudonné de Gozon's motto.
The Montcalm is equipped with various radars, sonars, and weapons systems, including Exocet missiles and a 100mm cannon. She also carries two Westland Lynx helicopters.
Engaged in numerous missions, the frigate participated in operations in Lebanon, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean. She played a crucial role in Operation Harmattan in Libya and Operation Chammal in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Montcalm completed its final mission in 2017 before returning to Toulon for decommissioning.
