Anti-Submarine-Warfaire
A Poster of the french Anti-submarine warfare
Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) refers to all tactics aimed at detecting and neutralizing enemy submarines. It mobilizes different means: surface ships equipped with sonars, helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft and attack submarines. Operations are coordinated from an ASW escort.
Although submarines have been used since the First World War, their role intensified during the Second World War. The Cold War marked a race for innovation, pitting the stealth of submarines against the progress of ASW techniques.
Actors and equipment
- ASW ships: Frigates and corvettes equipped with sonars, torpedoes, ASW missiles and embarked helicopters.
- ASW helicopters: Equipped with dipping sonars and torpedoes, they are effective in detecting, tracking and attacking submarines.
- Maritime patrol aircraft: Capable of monitoring large areas, equipped with various sensors, sometimes assisted by drones.
- Attack submarines: Silent and equipped with passive sonars, they discreetly track enemy submarines.
- Torpedoes and the study of marine conditions (salinity, temperature, etc.) are essential to optimize ASM systems.
France is also testing underwater and aerial drones to diversify its arsenal.
