The Jeanne d'Arc helicopter carrier was built by the Brest Arsenal from 1959 to 1961.

Launched under the provisional name of La Résolue, it received the name Joan of Arc on July 16, 1964.

Its mission, in peacetime, is to serve as a school building for the benefit of the Application School for Navy officers.

The air group includes 2 Alouette III helicopters from the 22S squadron, it is reinforced by a detachment of combat helicopters from the ALAT (Light Aviation of the Army) made up of 2 Puma or Cougar and 3 Gazelle helicopters with a detachment of 40 men.

In wartime, Joan of Arc conducts combat missions, either in the field of anti-submarine warfare by taking on 8 WG 13 Lynx helicopters, or as part of an external action mission by placing using ALAT Puma or Gazelle helicopters, and transporting landing troops.

180 meters long for a tonnage of 13,000 tonnes loaded, La Jeanne d'Arc was one of the largest ships in the Navy. She was decommissioned in 2010 after more than 40 years of career.
