Poster hugues aircraft h-1 racer speed record
A poster of the Hugues Aicraft H-1 racer and his world speed record
The Hughes H-1 is a racing aircraft built by Hughes Aircraft in 1935. It set a world speed record and a transcontinental speed record across the United States.
The H-1 was the last privately built aircraft to break the world speed record, most of the subsequent aircraft that held this record were of military designs.
The first studies began in 1934 with an exact large model (around 60 cm long) which was tested in the wind tunnel of the California Institute of Technology. The plane revealed a remarkable speed potential (more than 580 km / h).
On his first flight, September 13, 1935, he broke the world speed record, with 352.39 miles per hour. The pilot was none other than Howard Hugues himself.
