The Naval Action Force (FAN) is the French Navy's main surface fleet, led by an admiral (ALFAN). It ensures the preparation and training of units for their operational missions. In 2022, the FAN comprised approximately 10,500 sailors and 98 surface units, playing a crucial role in prevention and projection missions.
Created in 1992, the FAN merged the Atlantic and Mediterranean squadrons. Its headquarters is based in Toulon. The FAN comprises several categories of vessels, including the carrier strike group centered around the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, essential for power projection and nuclear deterrence.
The amphibious force includes Mistral-class helicopter carriers and various landing craft. Combat frigates, such as the Horizon-class air defense frigates and the multi-mission frigates (FREMM), offer advanced air control and missile firing capabilities.
Sovereignty vessels, dedicated to maritime security, include surveillance frigates and patrol boats. The mine warfare force ensures the security of submarines and ports. Military support and public service vessels play a crucial role in logistics and assistance.
Finally, the French Naval Air Force has training vessels for preparing sailors, thus ensuring a wide range of maritime missions.
