AMX AuF1

The Model F1 self-propelled gun (AuF1) is a French surface-to-surface artillery system mounted on the chassis of the AMX 30 battle tank, designed to be adaptable to other platforms such as the T-72, Leopard 2 , etc. It was developed by the Roanne construction workshop of GIAT (which became GIAT Industries then Nexter Systems) for the chassis and the Bourges Armament Studies and Manufacturing Establishment for the 155 high rate of fire turret (155 GCT). In 2016, the French Army still had 32 AuF1 units assigned to the 40th RA of Suippes, but it is currently being replaced by the CAESAR.

In the 1960s, NATO considered replacing field artillery batteries equipped with the 105 mm caliber with 155 mm guns due to their superior power in the face of the potential threat from Warsaw Pact forces. Thus, the development of the AuF1 responded to a need for mobility comparable to that of a battle tank, an ability to quickly deal with varied targets over 360 degrees, a high rate of fire with NBC and anti-weapons protection. portable.

The self-propelled gun is equipped with an innovative automatic loading for the time, allowing an efficient and maximum rate of fire. Its unique semi-automatic loading system for shells and combustible casings ensures firing capability in NBC atmosphere, making the AuF1 an advanced artillery system.

Over the years, the AuF1 has undergone significant developments, notably from the AuF1 to the AuF1 T with improvements to the control and power systems. Experimental and intermediate versions have been developed to validate new technologies and improve operational capabilities.

Currently, the transition to CAESAR is underway, with planning for the gradual withdrawal of AuF1 units in favor of these new, more modern systems. The current military programming law provides for the complete replacement of AuF1s with CAESAR guns, thus marking a step in the evolution of French artillery towards more efficient equipment adapted to contemporary challenges.
