Poster vintage "le triomphant" class french submarine
A digital drawing of the Le Triomphant SSBN class French submarine
The so-called "new generation" nuclear submarines were launched in 1994, with the first in line "Le Triomphant".
Longer, wider, more massive, the new SSBNs are also much more discreet than the "Le Redoutable" submarines, thanks to a design aiming to suspend all noisy elements on silent-blocks.
At their start (1997) they embarked M45 missiles, then M51 missiles with a range of nearly 10,000 kms. Four units out of the 6 initially planned are produced, with a gradual commissioning: Le Triomphant in 1997, Le Téméraire in 1999, Le Vigilant in 2004 and Le Terrible in 2010. Based at l'île Longue, they now operate for themselves. four nuclear deterrence of France, by being integrated within the Strategic Oceanic Force.
The lifespan of these submersibles being around 40 years, the successor "SNLE -3G" should be revealed in the coming years for a launch in the 2030s.
Poster produced on iPad Pro and Procreate in 2019.
