Marine commandos are highly specialized elite forces in maritime, air and land operations, engaged in varied missions such as counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, rescue, maritime security and amphibious warfare. Their history dates back to their creation in 1944, when they were formed as the first French unit to liberate France during the Second World War, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Philippe Kieffer. Since then, marine commandos have played a crucial role in the wars of decolonization and evolved to become an essential component of the French Navy.

Currently, the marine commandos consist of seven units, each specialized in specific missions, ranging from underwater combat to logistical support. Their rigorous training includes a demanding Commando Course (STAC), combining intensive physical and mental tests over a nine-week period. Marine commandos remain at the forefront of technological and operational innovation, playing a central role in sensitive operations such as hostage rescue and counter-terrorism missions, and receiving their orders from the Chief of Naval Staff. National or Special Operations Command (COS).
