Poster "red october" soviet submarine
A digital drawing of the famous "Red October" SSBN submarine, from the main book "The Hunt for the Red October".
"It's a great day, Comrades. We are going to make history."
The words of Commander Marko Ramius could have remained only at the stage of fiction. But the "Red October" has been a legend in the submarine world ever since.
And for good reason: the novel "The Hunt for Red October" written by Tom Clancy in 1984 was a real success. A thrilling story worthy of the greatest techno thrillers. The book will also be adapted into a film in 1990 by director John McTiernan, with Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery as guestars.
But why is the Red October so fascinating?
Very largely inspired by the "Typhoon" submarine (Project 941), the biggest and largest submarine in the world, the Red October is according to its author "even longer and wider". It takes imagination to better appreciate its gigantism: 198 meters long, 28 meters wide and nearly 50,000 tonnes (!!!). The Red October is also equipped with two additional nuclear missiles (26 in total).
To complete the whole, a secret system of propulsion, making it almost undetectable.
This submarine will be faithfully reproduced in the film, with incredible models that served as the inspiration for this drawing.
