Narval class submarines, also called "1200 Tonnes", are a class of submarines designed and launched in the 1950s by France. They are the first submarines manufactured in "sections".

Very strongly inspired by the technologies and the design of the Type XXI U-boats, they take up the general line.

78.4 m long and nearly 8 meters wide, these submersibles, sometimes called "squadron ships", can travel long distances and operate for weeks in the Atlantic Ocean.

Several ships of this class will break records: 42 days of diving in a row for the Requin, crossing under the ice for the Dauphin and the Narval, Polar cruise for the Marsouin and the Espadon ...

These ships will be overhauled in the mid-1970s, notably with a different tower, the removal and addition of certain equipment. The Dauphin will even have the right to a second career in the 80s / 90s, even when its sister ships are disarmed, by participating as a floating (and diving) laboratory for the SNLE-NG, then in production.

One of these submarines, the Espadon, is still visible and open to the public at the Saint Nazaire museum.
