A poster of the SR-71 Blackbird airplane
The SR-71, also known as the "Blackbird", is a strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by the United States in the 1960s during the Cold War. It is a supersonic reconnaissance aircraft, designed to operate at very high altitudes and at supersonic speeds to evade radar detection and enemy missiles.
The SR-71 was developed by the American company Lockheed Skunk Works, headed by the famous aeronautical engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson. It first flew in 1964 and entered operational service with the US Air Force in 1966.
The plane is powered by two Pratt & Whitney J58 jet engines, which allow it to reach a speed of Mach 3.3 (over 3,500 km/h), making it the fastest plane ever built for operational use. It can fly at an altitude of over 25,000 meters, well above most fighter planes and missiles of the time.
The SR-71 is equipped with advanced reconnaissance systems, including optical, electromagnetic and radar sensors, which allow it to gather intelligence information over long distances, including over enemy territory. It was used for surveillance and reconnaissance missions during the Cold War, including monitoring military installations and nuclear activities of the Soviet Union.
The SR-71 is also famous for its distinctive design, with a tapered shape and black color that earned it its nickname "Blackbird". Due to its advanced technology and highly classified nature, the SR-71 has become an iconic symbol of American aerospace engineering and technological superiority. It was retired from service in 1998, but remains one of the most iconic and advanced aircraft ever built.
