A digital drawing explaining how French Navy will fix the SSN "perle" which caught on fire in June 2020
Victim of a fire in June 2020, the SNA "Perle", the latest of the "Rubis" class attack submarines, was seriously damaged in a dock of the military port of Toulon.
Numerous investigations were carried out, in particular on the thick hull of the ship (the most important element, knowing that all of the submarine's equipment was no longer on board due to maintenance). It was decided in October 2020 that the submarine would be repaired in Cherbourg, in the yards where it was born.
The repair process will involve cutting the front section of the submarine, which will be replaced by that of the SSN "Saphir", decommissioned in 2019 and awaiting dismantling. The operation is atypical, but fully mastered by Naval Group, which has extensive experience in the field.

This work will take place during the years 2021/2022 for a return to service hoped for by 2023. The SNA "Perle" will then be able to sail for ten years, before being replaced by the last of the submarines. class Suffren.
