A poster of the french nuclear missile ASMP-A of the strategic forces
The ASMP-A3 improved medium-range air-to-ground missile, manufactured by MBDA, is a cruise missile used by the French Army, reserved for the Strategic Air Force and the nuclear Naval Air Force. It carries a 300 kiloton nuclear warhead over a distance of 500 km and entered service in 2010, replacing the ASMP. Its characteristics are secret.
Historically, ASMP missiles were deployed on modernized Mirage IV, Mirage 2000N, and Super-Étendard aircraft from 1986. The ASMPA program, launched in 1997, led to successful tests and operational commissioning in 2009-2010. Regular exercises, such as "force evaluation tests" (TEF), are conducted to maintain the credibility of nuclear deterrence.
ASMPA is described as "pre-strategic" or "last warning" before a massive strike. It offers flexibility of use and can be recalled until the last moment. The missile has a range of 500 km, a speed of Mach 3, and high maneuverability.
The ASMPA-R renovation program, launched in 2014, aims to improve the missile's performance, with a first successful test firing in 2024. ASMPA's successor, ASN4G, is in development for 2035, exploring stealth and hypervelocity technologies. The MIHYSYS project, notified at the end of 2024, aims to improve knowledge and technologies for supersonic and hypersonic air-breathing thrusters.
