The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, developed in the 1950s, is a jet tanker aircraft designed for the United States Air Force, based on the Dash 80 prototype and sharing similarities with the Boeing 707. It was used primarily to refuel B-47 and B-52 strategic bombers, as well as in various conflicts, including the Vietnam War. More than 800 were produced, including 732 for the USAF, but other countries, such as France, also acquired the aircraft. The KC-135 has undergone several modifications, including re-engining with more modern engines to extend its service life, which should extend until 2040.

France used 12 C-135Fs, notably for the Strategic Air Forces, specifically adapted for its needs, until their gradual withdrawal in 2025. They are replaced by the Airbus A330 MRTT.

These aircraft are taken over by the American company Metrea.
