Poster SSBN NG "Le Vigilant"
A digital drawing of the nuclear french SSBN "Le Vigilant" in dry dock.
The so-called "new generation" nuclear submarines were launched in 1994, with the first-of-the-line "Le Triomphant".
Longer, wider, more massive, the new SSBNs are also much more discreet than the "Le Redoutable" submarines, thanks to a design aiming to suspend all noisy elements on silent-blocks.
At their start (1997) they embarked M45 missiles, then M51 missiles with a range of nearly 10,000 kms. Four units out of the 6 initially planned are produced, with a gradual commissioning: Le Triomphant in 1997, the Téméraire in 1999, the Vigilant in 2004 and the Terrible in 2010. Based at Ile Long, they now operate for themselves. four nuclear deterrence of France, by being integrated within the Strategic Oceanic Force.
The submarine shown here on its tin line is the Vigilant, the third in the series.
